Green chemistry is an environmental design of specific chemical elements and the safe processes and/or products that will protect the Earth from polluting, hazardous chemical toxic waste products. The importance of preserving the environment could be achieved through chemistry. The students embarked upon a research journey using the elements from their studies of the periodic table. The collaborating students were allowed to only use three of the elements to create the best “green chemical product.”
The students learned about the origin of the element that they were studying, the special

chemical reactions, and their properties that would generate a safe, effective, and efficient molecule. Understanding that energy transforms into many forms, the students examined natural examples of chemical energy reactions such as photosynthesis, glycolysis, etc. Each group’s choice was unique and demonstrated the positive values of cooperative and collaborative learning experiences by producing authentic ideas to solve the environmental problem. The use of various computer software programs assisted in communicating their PowerPoint presentations with audio, color, graphics, and animation.

Clean Energy for Survival Project Steps |
Step 1 : Concept Maps
- Mr. Bass' students developed concept maps for the information the students already knew.
- The Inspiration graphic organizer to the right is an example of step 1.

Step 2: Energy
- The class selected the element or compound with 3 or more energy levels that could possibly be used as a replacement for fossil fuels and be considered as clean energy.
- Students selected questions concerning their project specific to choice and energy source they wanted to replace.
- Determined our goals for the project and how we needed to get to the end--- Presentation Day!!

Questions to Guide Our Research

Teacher questions:
- What is clean energy?
- How will it affect the human population?
- How do you get clean energy from an element?

Student group questions:
- Is the form of energy expensive?
- How long will the energy last?
- How abundant is the element?

Step 3: Research
- Focus on researching information to discover if the elements chosen could be used in the place of fossil fuels and be considered a clean source and recording the note-facts and the source.
- Plagiarism- what is it? Why is it wrong? How do you keep from plagiarizing another’s work?

Examples of Facts
- Francium is the heaviest of the naturally occurring alkali elements.
- The longest-lived francium isotopes are 212Fr and 223Fr which have half-lives of about 20 minutes.
- People study francium by cooling and trapping it in a magneto-optical trap, and then subjecting it to a variety of laser pulses.
